African Woman’s Voice

A feature documentary

African Woman’s Voice follows young journalist Massitan Coulibaly over 4 years as she fights to make women’s voices heard in media in Mali, West Africa.

African Woman’s Voice is a feature documentary film charting the career of young West African journalist Massitan Coulibaly as she progresses from working as reporter in her hometown of Ségou, Mali, to the capital of Bamako. Facing family pressure to settle down, Massitan marries and moves to her in- laws’ household, where she conforms to the traditional domestic role reserved for women. With approval from her husband and feminist mother-in-law, she nevertheless manages to continue her training and search for work opportunities as a paid journalist. Communicating via radio, video and text articles,  Massitan strives to record and share real stories about Malian women dealing with contemporary  issues. She covers a variety of topics such as maternal health, FGM  (female genital mutilation), traditional crafts,  market gardening and women’s political represention in an increasingly polarized society.
